Furniture that’s crafted for the long run
The most sustainable furniture is the kind that stays in use. At Hardman, that belief shapes everything that follows: how we source our hardwood, design new collections, and craft each piece.
We only work with FSC-certified oak, walnut, ash, and iroko from sustainably managed forests. Each piece is made to order — so we don’t carry stock or overproduce — and finished by hand with plant-based hardwax oil that can be refreshed over time. In our workshop, we use 100% of every tree that comes through the door.
How we approach sustainability
Four principles shape how we source, build, and finish every piece of Hardman furniture.
Responsibly Sourced Hardwood
Every Hardman piece starts in a forest. The wood species, the soil it grew in, the way the forest is cared for. All of it shapes the piece that you select for your home or project.
That's why we're selective about where our wood comes from. We only use FSC-certified oak, walnut, ash, and iroko, sourced from sustainably managed forests in Europe and North America. FSC certification means the hardwood we use comes from forests where long-term health, biodiversity, and the communities working in them are protected.
These woods are also part of how we think about longevity. Oak, walnut, ash, and iroko are strong, slow-changing hardwoods. They don't warp or shrink the way softer woods do, so the piece you choose will hold up to years of daily use.

A Closed-Loop Workshop
All of our hardwood furniture has been crafted by a single production partner, who builds furniture exclusively for us. That means we have close control around how each piece gets made. One result: we use 100% of every tree we work with.
Here’s how we do that:
- A tree arrives at the workshop. We cut it into rough boards. Offcuts from this early stage are stored and cut into firewood for the local market.
- The boards move into a drying chamber to season. This is a slow process; hardwood needs time to release moisture before it's stable enough to build furniture with. The drier the wood, the less it will move or warp once it's part of a finished piece.
- The dried boards become furniture. Building each piece involves planing the boards smooth and sanding the surfaces to their final finish. Both steps produce leftover material: planing creates shavings, sanding creates sawdust.
- The shavings and sawdust become fuel. We compress them into wood pellets, which power the heating machine that runs the drying chamber. Today's offcuts become tomorrow's drying fuel.
Plant-based hardwax oil finish
Every Hardman piece is finished by hand with plant-based hardwax oil, a surface treatment made from natural plant oils and waxes. Hardwax oil protects the wood’s surface while letting the grain and tone show through.
Unlike many synthetic topcoats that chip and require a full refinish to correct wear, hardwax oil is designed to be renewed over time. Smaller areas can often be refreshed without refinishing the entire piece, which extends the life of the furniture and reduces the need for replacement.
The natural hardwax oils we use are also low-VOC, contributing to cleaner indoor air. They don't release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that linger long after a finish has been applied. Synthetic finishes often do the opposite, they off-gas slowly for weeks or even months after a piece arrives, which is what causes that distinct "new furniture" smell and what affects the air in the rooms where the furniture lives.

Made to order, made to last
All Hardman furniture is made to order. That means we only build new pieces after you've ordered. The result is less material waste, no stock sitting unsold, and a destination for everything we make: a home, a restaurant, a hotel, a project.
Our mission is to make furniture that earns its place in both form and craftsmanship. That starts with timeless silhouettes and simple curved forms that still feel right decades from now. And it continues in the workshop, where every piece is crafted with its long life already in mind: how it will be used, repaired, and lived with.
Solid hardwood construction and a renewable finish mean surfaces can be sanded back, finishes can be reapplied in sections, and joinery is built to last. Hardman pieces are designed and crafted to move between homes, cities, and chapters of life rather than being replaced.

Where does your hardwood come from? +
We only source FSC-certified oak, walnut, ash, and iroko from sustainably managed forests in Europe and North America. These are strong, slow-changing hardwoods that don't warp or shrink the way softer woods do, so the furniture we build from them holds up to years of daily use.
FSC certification verifies the wood comes from forests managed with attention to long-term health, biodiversity, and the communities working in them.
Is Hardman furniture FSC-certified? +
All the hardwood we work with is FSC-certified. Workshop-level FSC certification for individual pieces is a separate process from material sourcing, and one we're actively working toward.
What finish do you use, and is it safe for the home? +
We finish every Hardman piece by hand with plant-based hardwax oil. It's a surface treatment made from natural plant oils and waxes, designed to protect the wood while letting the grain and tone show through.
The hardwax oils we use are also low-VOC, contributing to cleaner indoor air.
Hardwax oil is also designed to be renewed over time. Unlike many synthetic topcoats that chip and require a full refinish to correct wear, smaller areas can often be refreshed without refinishing the entire piece. With basic care, a Hardman piece can keep its finish looking and feeling good for decades.
How does your workshop handle waste? +
We use 100% of every tree we work with, which is possible because we partner with a single production workshop and have direct control over how each piece gets made.
The waste loop works in two stages. When a tree first arrives, we cut it into rough boards, and the offcuts from that early stage are stored and sold as firewood for the local market. Later in the process, after the boards have been dried and shaped into furniture, the planing and sanding produce shavings and sawdust. We compress both into wood pellets, which fuel the heating machine that runs our drying chamber.
Can Hardman furniture be repaired or refinished? +
Yes. Hardman pieces are built from solid hardwood and finished with natural hardwax oil, two choices that make repair and renewal possible over time. Surfaces can be sanded back. Finishes can be reapplied in sections without a full refinish. The joinery is built to last. Our aim is to craft timeless, long-lasting pieces. Furniture that holds up to daily use and can be repaired or refinished rather than replaced.
What materials do you use for upholstery? +
For indoor upholstered seating and chairs, we work primarily with Italian linen and leather, selected for their durability and natural qualities. Both are natural fibers, breathable, and hold up to years of daily use. We also offer a wide range of custom fabric options, and we can upholster a Hardman piece with your own material if you have one in mind.
How are you continuing to improve your sustainability practices? +
Sustainability at Hardman is an ongoing practice. We currently source FSC-certified wood and are working toward workshop-level FSC certification as a next step. We're also developing recycled upholstery options for our outdoor pieces. As these efforts move from in progress to in production, we'll update this page.
Do you offer COM (customer’s own material)? +
Yes. COM is available for all upholstered pieces.
