Ons Verhaal
Hardman Design begon in 2012 in Berlijn, waar Liam Hardman elk meubelstuk dat besteld werd, zelf maakte. Deze praktische benadering vormde de basis voor alles wat daarna kwam, een gedisciplineerde focus op verhoudingen, details en constructie. Tegenwoordig is Hardman Design gevestigd in New York en wordt het geleid door partners Liam Hardman en Erika Hardman. Ons team bestaat inmiddels uit meer dan 60 meester-vakmensen.
Van Berlijn tot New York, veel plekken hebben invloed gehad op ons werk. De tijd die we doorbrachten in Zuid-Frankrijk verdieptе onze waardering voor materialen met karakter. In Californië versterkten de uitgestrekte landschappen onze focus op organische vormen en gaven ze ons het vertrouwen om één sterk idee voor zich te laten spreken. En New York — waar ruimte schaars is en het leven snel gaat — heeft ons ervan overtuigd dat elk object zijn plaats moet verdienen.
Vandaag de dag, zelfs nu we groter zijn geworden en onze invloeden zijn uitgebreid, is onze benadering hetzelfde gebleven. Ons doel is meubels te ontwerpen die qua kwaliteit en vorm duurzaam genoeg zijn om met mensen mee te bewegen tussen huizen, steden en verschillende levensfasen. Daarmee bedoelen we dat we dicht bij ons uitgangspunt blijven en bij de mensen voor wie we het maken. Of je een ontwerper bent die aan een groot project werkt of een particulier die meubels voor zijn huis kiest, wij bieden directe ondersteuning gedurende het hele proces.
Hoe jouw meubel wordt gemaakt
Onze meubelstukken worden gemaakt uit massief hardhout en afgewerkt met een combinatie van geavanceerde machinale technieken en ambachtelijk handwerk.

Selectie van hardhout
Bij Hardman begint alles met het materiaal. Elk meubel in onze collectie wordt gemaakt van hoogwaardig eiken-, noten- of essenhout uit duurzaam beheerde bossen. Het hout wordt in planken gezaagd en vervolgens gedurende een langere periode zorgvuldig gedroogd. Deze droogtijd zorgt ervoor dat het hout klaar is voor een nauwkeurige verwerking en een lange levensduur, ook bij dagelijks gebruik.
Constructie van massief hout
Deze langzaam gedroogde hardhouten planken vormen de basis van jouw op maat gemaakte meubel. Wij verwerken de planken tot strakke, gelijkmatige onderdelen, monteren de basiscomponenten en gebruiken gespecialiseerde machines om belangrijke details zoals rondingen en verbindingspunten te vormen. Jouw meubel wordt één geheel door netjes afgewerkt timmerwerk en een nauwkeurige handmatige montage.
Zorgvuldige voorbereiding van het oppervlak.
Zodra het model is gebouwd, verfijnen wij de oppervlakken. Onze vakmensen schuren afronde elementen met de hand en gebruiken een schuurmachine voor grotere oppervlakken zoals tafelbladen om een perfect vlak resultaat te bereiken. Deze voorbereiding zorgt ervoor dat het meubel kwalitatief hoogwaardig aanvoelt en dat de afwerking gelijkmatig kan worden aangebracht.
Afwerking met hardwax
Vervolgens werken wij jouw meubel met de hand verder af met Osmo hardwax olie. Deze natuurlijke, plantaardige olie- en wasafwerking beschermt het hout en laat tegelijkertijd de nerf en kleur goed zichtbaar. Het is een afwerking met lage VOS (vluchtig organische stoffen) en dus zonder de chemische geur die vaak voorkomt bij synthetische coatings, waardoor het een uitstekende keuze is voor meubels in slaapkamers, eetkamers en dagelijkse leefruimtes.
Bekleding en zachte materialen
Gestoffeerde meubelen en stoelen worden gebouwd op onze massief houten frames en vervolgens met hetzelfde oog voor detail afgewerkt. Wij werken voornamelijk met natuurlijk Italiaans linnen en leer en bieden een breed assortiment stoffen voor de op maat gemaakte meubels.
Laatste kwaliteitscontroles
Tot slot wordt jouw meubelstuk, voordat het onze werkplaats verlaat, intern gecontroleerd door hetzelfde team dat het heeft gemaakt en afgewerkt. Zo zorgen wij ervoor dat alle details kloppen en dat het meubel precies overeenkomt met wat je hebt besteld.
Op bestelling gemaakt, gemaakt om lang mee te gaan
Alle Hardman meubels worden op bestelling gemaakt. Dat betekent dat we nieuwe meubelstukken pas vervaardigen nadat u een bestelling heeft geplaatst. Het resultaat: minder materiaalverspilling, geen onverkochte voorraad en een bestemming voor alles wat we maken: een woning, een restaurant, een hotel of een project.
Het is onze missie om meubels te maken die hun plek verdienen, zowel door hun vorm als door hun vakmanschap. Dat begint met tijdloze silhouetten en eenvoudige, gebogen vormen die ook tientallen jaren later nog goed aanvoelen. En het gaat verder in de werkplaats, waar elk meubelstuk wordt gemaakt met zijn lange levensduur al in gedachten: hoe het zal worden gebruikt, gerepareerd en deel zal uitmaken van het dagelijks leven.
De constructie van massief hardhout en een vernieuwbare afwerking maken het mogelijk om oppervlakken opnieuw te schuren, de afwerking plaatselijk opnieuw aan te brengen en verbindingen te maken die ontworpen zijn om lang mee te gaan. Hardman meubels zijn ontworpen en vervaardigd om mee te verhuizen tussen woningen en steden en om verschillende levensfasen te doorlopen, in plaats van te worden vervangen.

Kleine aanpassingen
Pas de houtsoort, afwerking, het karakter van de houtnerf of de afmetingen van elk meubelstuk uit onze collectie aan. Dit is de meest voorkomende aanvraag en het eenvoudigst uit te voeren. Als u een tafel iets langer, een afwerking iets lichter of een bedframe met een niet-standaard breedte nodig heeft, is dit de beste manier om te beginnen.
We zorgen ervoor dat de verhoudingen, balans en ambachtelijke kwaliteit behouden blijven, terwijl we het meubelstuk aanpassen aan uw wensen.
Mix & Match
Combineer kenmerken van verschillende Hardman-meubelstukken om iets te creëren dat niet als standaardoptie beschikbaar is. Bijvoorbeeld een tafelblad van het ene ontwerp met het onderstel van een ander.

So, you want to buy a dining table. It might sound obvious, but one of the most important things to consider is the size of your desired piece, and how it will look in your room.
There are numerous factors which can shape your decision, such as the size of your space, the positioning of your table, how much space the legs take up and where they are positioned, and how you plan to use your table - from small family meals to large social gatherings.
It’s certainly not a decision which should be taken lightly; picking the right dimensions is fundamental to creating the best visual and practical balance for your room.

The Size Of Your Dining Table: Number Of Seats
One of the biggest considerations is knowing how many people will generally be sitting around your table, and how many seats you want to accommodate.
As a general rule of thumb, these are the rough sizes depending on the number of seats:

These dimensions are based on rectangular tables. Hardman Design’s dining tables are hand built in this shape, but we can custom-build tables for a bespoke shape, size and finish.
Rectangular tables have multiple benefits; great for their practicality, functionality and comfort.
A rectangle table generally fits well into the design of a room, and can typically accommodate more people and more space for dishes - especially compared to a circular table.
Benches, too, work well with a rectangular table and are a great idea to maximise this space, as they enable people to squeeze up, if necessary.
A rectangular table can also be a versatile solution within a room, looking great against a wall or window, or taking pride of place in the centre of a room.
Rectangular tables tend to have their legs positioned on the four corners - instead of in the middle like many circular tables - helping to give each diner more comfortable leg room underneath the table.
Generally speaking, a standard table is 71 to 76cm in height, so when it comes to seating, opt for a chair or bench from around 43 to 58cm from floor to seat.

Choosing The Right Size Table For Your Room
Knowing how the table will fit in in your room is another key consideration. For instance, how it will work in relation to other pieces of furniture, its proximity to doorways and walls, and allowing enough passing space.
As a general rule of thumb, you will need a minimum of 30 to 36 inches (76cm) for clearance space, measured from the nearest obstruction - whether it be a wall, door, window or furniture - to your chairs.
Where relevant, allow 120cm square for an entrance or doorway. If you’re putting your table into an open-plan area, this isn’t something to factor in.
To ensure you do not choose a dining table size that is too small, don’t leave more than 6ft (183cm) from the edge of the room, at least on one side.
How To Estimate The Size Of Your Dining Table
Perhaps one of the best ways of selecting the most appropriate-sized dining table for your room is mocking up how your furniture will look. This will really help you experience the feel of your table and how it will work in your space.
There are a number of ways that this can be done, including using masking tape or cardboard to replicate the size of your desired table.
For a more complete picture, you can even fill this space with books/newspaper to gauge the height and mass of the table.
Aside from recreating the look and size of your table, you can also map out the room to scale on paper, including walls, walkways and other furniture.
It is important that you don’t just measure the size of your table; instead, think about how it will work in practice. Questions you need to be asking include, have I left enough room for doorways and drawers to open? Have people got enough space to push their chairs out? Can they walk behind pushed-out chairs?
This type of planning will create a clearer picture and help ensure you select the right-sized table for both the look and functionality of your space.
Extendable Dining Tables
Extendable dining tables are a great option.
In fact, this type of furniture has enjoyed something of a revival in recent times.
And when looking at the benefits, it is easy to understand why extendable dining tables are en vogue.
