Hardman Craftsmanship

We make furniture the long way, on purpose. Every piece is made to order with a single partner workshop, keeping the entire process under one roof — from construction to finishing to final inspection.

How your furniture is made

Our pieces are built from solid hardwood, combining precision machining with extensive hand-finishing.

Here’s a look at our process:

ONE

Hardwood Selection

At Hardman, it all starts with the material. Every piece in our collection is made with high-quality oak, walnut, and ash from sustainably managed forests. We cut the wood into boards, which are then carefully dried over an extended period. That drying time ensures the wood is ready for precise construction and a long life in daily use.

TWO

Solid Wood Construction

These slow-dried hardwood boards become the building blocks of your made-to-order piece. We mill the boards into clean, even parts, assemble the base components, and use specialized machinery to shape key details like curves and connection points. Your piece comes together through clean joinery and exacting hand assembly.

THREE

Meticulous Surface Prep

Once the form is built, we refine the surfaces. Our skilled craftspeople sand curved elements by hand, and use a machine sander on large areas like table tops to achieve a perfectly flat surface. This prep work is what makes your furniture feel refined to the touch and allows the finish to go on evenly.

FOUR

Hardwax Finishing

From there, we finish your piece by hand with Osmo hardwax oil. This natural, plant-based oil-and-wax finish protects the wood while keeping the grain and tone visible. It’s low-VOC and doesn’t have the chemical smell common to synthetic coatings, making it a strong choice for furniture that lives in bedrooms, dining rooms, and everyday spaces.

FIVE

Upholstery and Soft Materials

Upholstered seating and chairs are built on our solid wood frames, then finished with the same attention to detail throughout. We work primarily with natural Italian linen and leather, and offer a wide range of custom fabric options.

SIX

Final Quality Checks

Finally, before your piece leaves our workshop, it’s reviewed in-house by the same team responsible for building and finishing it. This is how we confirm the details are right, so the furniture you receive matches exactly what you ordered.

What changes for custom work

Because all Hardman furniture is made to order, customization is part of how we work. We can easily adjust dimensions, incorporate custom materials or finishes, combine elements from existing designs, or create fully bespoke pieces.

For each custom piece, you’ll work directly with our team to talk through ideas, review options, and confirm the details before we get to work on your furniture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Read more frequently asked questions

Where is Hardman’s hardwood furniture made?

All Hardman pieces have been built in Ukraine since 2018 by our production partner, who crafts furniture exclusively for us. We formed this partnership to stay close to the craft and maintain consistent standards. In practice, that means any piece you order is built, finished, and reviewed by the same experienced team.

What does “made to order” mean at Hardman?

Made to order means your piece is crafted specifically for your space, rather than pulled from stock. Even our standard pieces are made to order, which allows you to choose the size, wood, finish, and fabrics that fit your home or project. This approach also makes it easier to support both semi-custom and fully custom requests. For custom work, we work with you to confirm all key details before production begins.

What finish do you use, and can it be renewed over time?

We use a plant-based hardwax oil finish. Hardwax oil is made from plant oils and waxes and is designed to protect the surface while letting the wood’s grain and tone show through. Unlike many synthetic topcoats that can chip or require a full refinish to correct wear, hardwax oil can be renewed over time, and smaller areas can often be refreshed without refinishing the entire piece.

What upholstery options do you offer (linen, leather, custom fabrics)?

For upholstered seating and chairs, we work primarily with natural Italian linen and leather. We also offer a wide range of custom fabric options. If you have your own material you’d like us to use, we can upholster a Hardman piece with it as well.

Can I customize dimensions, finishes, or upholstery?

Yes. We can adjust dimensions, support custom finishes, and help you specify upholstery and fabrics to suit your space or project. For more extensive requests, we can also develop fully bespoke pieces. Read more about our customization capabilities here.
